How to blur part of a photo on iPhone

Short answer: the Photos app can't blur an area you choose. Open BlurShot in Safari, tap Choose image, drag over the part to hide and tap Download. No app, no account.

Open the editor

The no-install way, step by step

  1. Open blurshot.io in Safari (or Chrome).
  2. Tap Choose image and pick the photo or screenshot from your library.
  3. Pick Blur, Pixelate, Solid box or Emoji, then drag a finger over each area. Drag a box to move it; use its round corner to resize.
  4. Tap Download PNG and choose Save to Photos or Save to Files, or use Share to send it straight to Messages.

The photo is opened inside Safari and never uploaded. The saved copy has no GPS location or camera data in it.

Apple documents Clean Up and Portrait editing in its iPhone User Guide. If you only need a black bar over text, markup's filled rectangle is fine; for a blur, a pixelated plate or several faces at once, use the editor.

Questions people ask

Can you blur part of a photo on iPhone without an app?

Yes, two ways. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, the Photos Clean Up tool pixelates a face when you circle it. For anything else (text, plates, screens), open blurshot.io in Safari: it runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install.

Does the iPhone have a blur tool in Photos?

Not a brush. Photos can blur a background through the Portrait depth control (only on photos shot in Portrait mode), and Clean Up can mosaic a circled face on Apple Intelligence models. There is no tool to blur an arbitrary area such as text.

How do I blur text in a screenshot on iPhone?

The screenshot markup has no blur, but you can draw a filled rectangle over it: tap the thumbnail, tap +, choose the square, set it to filled and drag it over the text. For a real blur or pixelation, use BlurShot in Safari.

Will the edited photo keep my location?

Photos edits keep the original metadata, including GPS. Images downloaded from BlurShot are re-drawn from pixels, so location, camera and date tags are not carried over.
