Blur text in an image,
Paste the screenshot, drag across each line, download. Solid box is selected because it is the only effect that cannot be guessed back; switch to Blur or Pixelate for a softer look.
- No upload. Pixels are processed in this tab; open DevTools → Network to check.
- No account, no watermark.
- Metadata stripped on every download.
Which effect for which text
| Text | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Passwords, card numbers, PINs, one-time codes, API keys | Solid box | Short strings in a known font can be matched against blurred guesses |
| Names, emails and phone numbers in a chat or email | Solid box, or heavy pixelation | Names are guessable from length and context; a box removes the doubt |
| Usernames and avatars in a meme or social screenshot | Blur or pixelate | Keeps the picture readable; the goal is courtesy, not secrecy |
| Long paragraphs (a document you are previewing) | Blur | Long text in a strong blur is not practically recoverable and looks tidy |
How to blur out text in a screenshot
- Paste or open it. On a computer, take the screenshot and press Ctrl/⌘+V on this page. On a phone, tap Choose image.
- Drag across each line. One box per line is neater than one big box, and leaves the rest of the conversation readable.
- Match the background (optional). With Solid box selected, set Fill to the screenshot's background colour, so the text looks removed rather than censored.
- Look for repeats. The same name often appears in a header, a reply quote and a tab title.
- Download or copy. The file is re-drawn from pixels, so there are no layers to peel back and no metadata.
Why we push the box for secrets: the unblur demo runs a real guessing attack on a pixelated PIN and shows it recovering the digits. For a step-by-step with each phone and computer's built-in tools, see how to redact a screenshot; for faces use blur faces.
Questions people ask
How do I blur out text in a screenshot?
Open the screenshot in the editor above (paste it with Ctrl/⌘+V or tap Choose image), drag a box across each line of text and download. Keep Solid box for anything secret; switch to Blur when you only want the text unreadable at a glance, such as chat names in a meme.
Is blurred text safe?
Not always. Text uses a known font at a known size, so a light blur or coarse pixelation over short strings like PINs, card numbers or one-time codes can be guessed back by rendering candidates and comparing. A solid box removes the pixels entirely and cannot be reversed.
How can I hide text in an image without it looking ugly?
Pick a Solid box in the background colour of the screenshot (use the Fill colour picker), so the line simply looks empty. On photos, a strong blur keeps the picture natural.
Can AI find all the text I should hide?
Optionally. "Find areas with AI" with Personal text ticked boxes emails, phone numbers, names, addresses, card and account numbers, IDs and tokens. Review every box and add any it missed. The image is only sent after you confirm.
How do I blur text on iPhone without an app?
Open blurshot.io in Safari, tap Choose image, pick the screenshot from Photos, drag your finger across the text and tap Download PNG. The built-in iPhone markup has no blur, only shapes and pens.
