Why redaction goes wrong
Most leaked "redactions" were never removed in the first place. The common failures:
- A shape on top, text underneath. Drawing a black rectangle in a PDF editor or a slide adds an object over the text. Copy-and-paste, or deleting the rectangle, brings it back. Court filings have been exposed this way.
- Blur or pixelation on short strings. Card numbers and codes use predictable fonts, so a guessing attack can match them. See the live demo.
- A semi-transparent highlighter. Raising the brightness or contrast makes the text readable again.
- Missing one copy. The same email address appears in the From line, the signature and the URL bar. Redact all of them.
- Metadata in the file. A redacted phone photo can still carry GPS coordinates. BlurShot drops all metadata on export; for untouched photos use the EXIF remover.

If a password, key or token was ever visible in a screenshot you shared, rotate it. Redacting the copy you still have does not recall the one already sent.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between redacting and blurring?
Redaction removes the information: the pixels are replaced with a flat colour. Blurring and pixelating only distort the pixels, and in some cases the original can be guessed back. For documents, redaction is the standard.
Is a black box drawn in BlurShot really permanent?
Yes. The export is a new flat image. There are no layers, annotations or undo history in the file, which is the classic mistake with PDF editors and some screenshot markup tools that keep the original underneath.
Can AI find personal information for me?
Optionally. "Find areas with AI" with Personal text ticked asks a vision model to box emails, phone numbers, names, addresses, card and account numbers, IDs, tokens and QR codes. You review every box. Do not send documents you are not permitted to share with a third party; redact those by hand.
Can I redact a PDF here?
Not directly. Take a screenshot of the page or export it as an image, redact it here, and share the image. That also guarantees the hidden text layer of the PDF does not come along.
What colour should redaction boxes be?
Black is conventional for legal documents. Any solid colour is equally secure; pick white to match a page background or your brand colour for social posts. Avoid semi-transparent highlights.
